Duck and Waffle is a 24/7 restaurant situated on the 40th floor of the Heron Tower, the highest restaurant in the United Kingdom, situated in the heart of London's Aldgate.
Boasting British cuisine, there has been such a buzz around the restaurant that was daring to serve sweet and savory on one plate, with an all round unique menu and spectacular views. I couldn't quite grasp the concept of a dish consisting of duck, waffle, duck egg, and maple syrup. But I added it to my list of must-go-to restaurants, all the same.
I finally had the pleasure of getting to embark on this experience of dinner in the sky, for my birthday.
My partner and I arrived at the bottom of the Heron Tower, and once we got past the guy with the clip board and his muscle, we got our first taste of how impressive the location of the restaurant is when we saw the glass elevator.
The ride in the glass elevator up to the 40th floor was nothing short of extraordinary, and a journey in itself, so have your camera ready as it only lasts a few seconds, if that.
As soon as you step out of the elevator you are greeted by the bar which had a very quirky chic design with its grafitti ridden walls, once we reached the dining room i was surprised by how open plan and spacious it was, but how it still managed to maintain an intimate feel.
Once upstairs the 180 degree span of sky, and skyscrapers was simply phenomenal, we were quickly seated but not near enough to the window, much to my disappointment.
We ordered champagne and cocktails from their vast selection they have to offer.
Despite my anxiety we scoured through the menu, and my beau and i agreed to order a starter each to share, for the starters itself i was a little disappointed, there wasn't anything inherently wrong with it.
It was very creative and decadent, and all that it promises to be on paper, but i was expecting more and found one of the starters just far too complex for what it was.
Although it was a bumpy start, without hesitation we both went on to order the famous Duck and Waffle signature dish itself, which surprisingly was really moreish, and all components of the dish really complimented each other well.
The duck confit was flavorsome and crispy on the outside with soft and tender meat on the inside, the duck egg was served sunny side up and looked and tasted like that of a chicken egg, the half a circle of waffle was cooked perfectly with a soft pillowy texture inside, all this was accompanied with a maple syrup with a delicate hint of mustard, with mustards seeds that bobbed on top.
I would definitely go there again but i would possibly have my duck egg cooked for longer, dare i say.
The service was impeccable and efficient, the staff were really attentive and gave us fresh cutlery between every course, the helpful waitress serving us, even went on as to recommend dishes and gave us her honest opinions on what we had chosen.
This restaurant is definitely an experience worth taking, especially if you have friends visiting from abroad, its a great way for them to see the city from a considerable height.
Also a great place for a first date, as its quirky menu and breath-taking views will encourage meaningful conversation and break the ice.
You will need to make a reservation quite far in advance to avoid the disappointment of not getting a table without a booking, for the prime time dinner slot, where you can appreciate the captivating beauty of the sun setting over the City of London.
The stunning unparalleled view of the city-scape is the perfect accompaniment to the rustic dishes which Duck and Waffle is known for.
All in all i can't fault Duck and Waffle, i was a little hesitant that it was all going to be a little nostalgic and that the food may get a little lost. But in no way, shape or form was this the case.
Phenomenal food and a equally phenomenal panoramic view to match, the views are really something else and worth the trip alone. I will definitely be returning and i would highly recommend that you do the same.
Approximate cost for two with alcoholic drinks and two courses came to over £100, which for a fine dining city meal with a stunning view is really quite reasonable.
